1 teaspoon whole green cardamom pods (about 15 pods)
1/4 teaspoon black peppercorns (about 10)
12 whole cloves
6 cups water
6 slices peeled fresh ginger
1 cinnamon sticks
2 star anise
1/3 cup loose leaf black tea (or 15 tea bags)

In a mortar and pestle, coarsely grind cardamom, peppercorns and cloves. In a medium pot combine spices, water, ginger, cinnamon stick, star anise and tea leaves or bags. Heat over medium heat until just boiling, about 10 to 15 minutes. Remove from heat and allow masala chai to steep additional 10 minutes.
Strain masala chai through fine mesh sieve, then portion into mugs. Add creamer to each mug, about 2 tablespoons in each. If a sweeter tea is desired, add about 1 tablespoon maple syrup to each mug. Stir masala chai and serve.
