7 Way to Make Your Freezer Work Harder for You

How you optimize your freezer space can be as confusing as keeping it clean. No matter what type of freezer you have, these seven tips are proof that effectively utilizing your freezer is not just possible, but also a lot easier than you think.

#1: FREEZE EGGS

Preserve eggs longer by freezing them in an ice cube tray. Just crack eggs or use Egg Beaters® and freeze in the tray for at least two hours until eggs are frozen solid. Remove egg cubes and store in a gallon-size freezer bag until they’re ready to use.   

#2: ROTATE ON THE REGULAR

Bring older foods to the front when adding new ones. That way, you’ll eat the items you’ve had the longest first and guard against freezer burn.

#3: FILL WITH WATER BOTTLES AND ICE PACKS

Fill extra pockets and spare space in your freezer with ice packs and water bottles. A full freezer uses less energy since less air is circulating and the temperature stays the same longer. And should the power go out, your food will stay safer longer!

#4: REMOVE PACKAGING FOR MORE ROOM

Removing bulky boxes and outside packaging can help create more space in a crowded freezer. Use sticky notes to help keep track of cooking instructions on Healthy Choice® or Marie Callender’s® frozen meals, and clear bins to contain smaller individually wrapped items.

#5: FREEZE COOKED MEAT

Having precooked meat ready to add to recipes can be a huge time-saver during your busy week. Cook and freeze meat like ground beef or Odom’s Tennessee Pride® sausage to have on hand for pasta sauces or casseroles. Frozen grilled chicken strips make a great addition to salads and pastas on the fly.

#6: KEEP BREAD FRESH LONGER

Do you have a hard time getting through a full loaf of bread? Or did you buy an extra loaf because it was on sale? Freezing bread is a great way to keep bread from going bad. Just make sure it’s wrapped in plastic, and when you’re ready to use, thaw on your kitchen counter at room temperature.

#7: CREATE SMOOTHIE KITS

Take the prep work out of putting together a healthy smoothie on busy mornings with smoothie kits. To create, just divvy out non-liquid ingredients like Birds Eye® frozen fruit into individual freezer bags. In the morning, just dump in a blender with yogurt or milk, blend, and enjoy!
