The temperature outside is heating up and I love it! There is no better time for fresh fruits, vegetables, and getting outside to grill. One thing I can’t live without, no matter the season, is pizza. Crispy crust, melted cheese, fresh toppings galore… but who wants to turn up the oven in the dead of summer to get that perfect crust? Definitely not me! So instead, I cook pizza on the grill. Perfectly grilled pizza dough needs the right amount of elasticity, workability, and, most importantly, can't be too sticky. That’s why I love this homemade pizza dough recipe. It’s easy to handle and, as a huge bonus, it comes together in the food processor in just minutes!
What you'll need
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon instant yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup warm water
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
Step 1. Combine the dry ingredients.
In a food processor, combine the flour, yeast, salt, and sugar. Pulse for 15 seconds to combine.
Step 2. Add the wet ingredients.
Next, add the warm water and olive oil to the food processor and continue to pulse until the dough forms a ball, about 30 seconds.
Step 3. Knead the dough and let it rise.
Transfer the dough from the food processor to a lightly floured surface and knead it a few times until it’s a nice smooth ball. The dough should not be sticky, but if it does stick to your fingers, work in additional flour 1 tablespoon at a time until it’s no longer sticky. Put the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover tightly, and put in a warm area for about an hour to rise.
Step 4. Roll the dough.
Once the pizza dough has doubled in size, it’s ready to roll. Place the dough on a lightly floured surface and, with a rolling pin, roll it into a 12-inch circle.
Step 5. Transfer dough to a baking sheet.
Spray a rimless baking sheet with cooking spray and transfer your homemade pizza dough recipe onto the pan. This will make it easy to transfer the dough to the grill. Pro tip: If the dough doesn’t stay in a nice round circle when you transfer it, that's fine. Just tell your family or guests it’s “rustic”!
Step 6. Grill the pizza dough.
Now, the fun part! It’s time to make grilled pizza dough. Transfer pizza dough to the grill and grill over medium-low heat until charred, about 2 minutes per side. Remove to add your favorite homemade pizza dough recipe toppings, then return the grilled pizza dough to the grill to finish cooking. Grill until toppings are heated through. Remove, allow to cool slightly, cut into pizzas, and enjoy!
