Produce item of the month: Strawberries

Back

Strawberry lovers know that strawberries are at their best during the spring months. It is also around this time that you’ll see supermarkets loading up on them. Once you’ve tasted fresh and juicy spring strawberries, the ones you ate during the winter will pale in comparison. In case that news isn't good enough … according to the USDA, the price of strawberries is actually down 8% making them one of the best buys in the produce department this month!

Fresh Strawberries

Strawberries add a juicy and sweet flavor to a variety of dishes including salads, salsas, desserts, fruit platters and many more. Because of their tangy and sweet taste profile, strawberries are versatile and can dress up any plate. Consider these strawberry recipe ideas for seasonal twists:

  • Contrast the bold flavors of P.F. Chang’s® Kung Pao Chicken or Mongolian Beef with the field-fresh flavor of diced strawberries.
  • Create a nutritious, new taste adventure for kids and grown-ups alike by mixing Marie Callender’s® Vermont White Cheddar Mac & Cheese with strawberry slices.
  • Fix up a flavor explosion by preparing a spicy and sweet salsa to go with your salty snacks. Simply dice strawberries and mix them together with RO*TEL® No Salt Added Diced Tomato with Green Chilies.
  • Dip strawberries in chocolate (Hint: Mother’s Day is coming soon) or top them with a whoosh of Reddi-wip® for an indulgent treat. You and your mom deserve it!

Reddi Wip and Dessert Strawberries

  • Top a Marie Callender’s Cheesy Ham and Potato Breakfast Pie with small strawberry chunks. Or complement a slice of Banana Cream Pie with a fresh strawberry or two.
  • You can even whip up a filling, nutrient-rich Grilled Shrimp Salad with strawberries. According to WebMD, strawberries are among the Top 20 foods for antioxidants; they are also high in Vitamin C, fiber, manganese and potassium.

Before eating strawberries, or other fruits and vegetables for that matter, make sure to always rinse them off with water to avoid consuming bacteria or leftover residue from pesticides. After washing, make sure to absorb the excess moisture by wrapping strawberries with a paper towel and storing them in the refrigerator; this will keep them firmer for a longer period of time.

Girl Holding Strawberries

Finally, teach your kids to love strawberries! How? By including your children in the cooking process. When preparing strawberry dishes, work together with your children to identify which meals taste just right with strawberries or by simply letting them choose which meals they’d prefer to eat them on. Either way, you’re all in for a lot of fun and some juicy meals!
